    Teaching as Wayfaring: Ethnographic Maps of Place and Art Teacher Induction

    Teachers face complex challenges as they transition from pre-service education to professional practice. However literature on teacher induction does not address the needs of teachers in specific content areas and the literature on the induction process within art education is sparse. Research shows the complex variety of teaching tasks facing beginning art teachers affects their ability to balance time and energy. Additionally the dissonance between the expectations of art educators and school environments causes many qualified, passionate teachers to leave the field. This points to the need for continued research on the experiences of beginning teachers. In this qualitative study, I use sensory ethnographic maps of place and movement to discuss beginning art teachers changing habitation of school place and experiences during their first years on the job. Specifically, I consider how beginning art teachers (re)create their art rooms based on the needs of their curriculum, work to navigate others’ appropriation of the art room, their perceptions of time, and how they cope with the increase in students, supplies, and tasks which accompany a teaching position. I argue that art teachers are wayfaring learners—responsive wanderers mindfully reacting to their teaching environment and the chorus of elements that constantly contribute to their learning. In conclusion, this project, by closely examining beginning art teachers own accounts of their teaching experiences sheds new light on the neglected issues of the ways place and movement affect beginning art teachers experience school places

    Recombining your way out of trouble: the genetic architecture of hybrid fitness under environmental stress

    Hybridization between species is a fundamental evolutionary force that can both promote and delay adaptation. There is a deficit in our understanding of the genetic basis of hybrid fitness, especially in non-domesticated organisms. We also know little about how hybrid fitness changes as a function of environmental stress. Here, we made genetically variable F2 hybrid populations from two divergent Saccharomyces yeast species, exposed populations to ten toxins, and sequenced the most resilient hybrids on low coverage using ddRADseq. We expected to find strong negative epistasis and heterozygote advantage in the hybrid genomes. We investigated three aspects of hybridness: 1) hybridity, 2) interspecific heterozygosity, and 3) epistasis (positive or negative associations between non-homologous chromosomes). Linear mixed effect models revealed strong genotype-by-environment interactions with many chromosomes and chromosomal interactions showing species-biased content depending on the environment. Against our predictions, we found extensive selection against heterozygosity such that homozygous allelic combinations from the same species were strongly overrepresented in an otherwise hybrid genomic background. We also observed multiple cases of positive epistasis between chromosomes from opposite species, confirmed by epistasis- and selection-free simulations, which is surprising given the large divergence of the parental species (~15% genome-wide). Together, these results suggest that stress-resilient hybrid genomes can be assembled from the best features of both parents, without paying high costs of negative epistasis across large evolutionary distances. Our findings illustrate the importance of measuring genetic trait architecture in an environmental context when determining the evolutionary potential of hybrid populations

    Extended instantons generated on the lattice

    We have been able to observe directly extended instantons on the lattice, with a new method that does not require dislocations to measure them, and where we do not perform cooling. We showed, based on the simple Abelian Higgs model in 1+11+1 dim., that one can extract the instanton and anti-instanton density and their size, by measuring the topological charge, QvQ_v , on sub-volumes vv larger than the instanton sizes, but smaller than the periodic lattice of size VV.     Particle alignments and shape change in 66^{66}Ge and 68^{68}Ge

    The structure of the NZN \approx Z nuclei 66^{66}Ge and 68^{68}Ge is studied by the shell model on a spherical basis. The calculations with an extended P+QQP+QQ Hamiltonian in the configuration space (2p3/22p_{3/2}, 1f5/21f_{5/2}, 2p1/22p_{1/2}, 1g9/21g_{9/2}) succeed in reproducing experimental energy levels, moments of inertia and QQ moments in Ge isotopes. Using the reliable wave functions, this paper investigates particle alignments and nuclear shapes in 66^{66}Ge and 68^{68}Ge. It is shown that structural changes in the four sequences of the positive- and negative-parity yrast states with even JJ and odd JJ are caused by various types of particle alignments in the g9/2g_{9/2} orbit. The nuclear shape is investigated by calculating spectroscopic QQ moments of the first and second 2+2^+ states, and moreover the triaxiality is examined by the constrained Hatree-Fock method.     Attenuation of leukocyte sequestration by selective blockade of PECAM-1 or VCAM-1 in murine endotoxemia

    Background: Molecular mechanisms regulating leukocyte sequestration into the tissue during endotoxemia and/or sepsis are still poorly understood. This in vivo study investigates the biological role of murine PECAM-1 and VCAM-1 for leukocyte sequestration into the lung, liver and striated skin muscle. Methods: Male BALB/c mice were injected intravenously with murine PECAM-1 IgG chimera or monoclonal antibody (mAb) to VCAM-1 ( 3 mg/kg body weight); controls received equivalent doses of IgG2a ( n = 6 per group). Fifteen minutes thereafter, 2 mg/kg body weight of Salmonella abortus equi endotoxin was injected intravenously. At 24 h after the endotoxin challenge, lungs, livers and striated muscle of skin were analyzed for their myeloperoxidase activity. To monitor intravital leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions, fluorescence videomicroscopy was performed in the skin fold chamber model of the BALB/c mouse at 3, 8 and 24 h after injection of endotoxin. Results: Myeloperoxidase activity at 24 h after the endotoxin challenge in lungs (12,171 +/- 2,357 mU/g tissue), livers ( 2,204 +/- 238 mU/g) and striated muscle of the skin ( 1,161 +/- 110 mU/g) was significantly reduced in both treatment groups as compared to controls, with strongest attenuation in the PECAM-1 IgG treatment group. Arteriolar leukocyte sticking at 3 h after endotoxin (230 +/- 46 cells x mm(-2)) was significantly reduced in both treatment groups. Leukocyte sticking in postcapillary venules at 8 h after endotoxin ( 343 +/- 69 cells/mm(2)) was found reduced only in the VCAM-1-mAb-treated animals ( 215 +/- 53 cells/mm(2)), while it was enhanced in animals treated with PECAM-1 IgG ( 572 +/- 126 cells/mm(2)). Conclusion: These data show that both PECAM-1 and VCAM-1 are involved in endotoxin-induced leukocyte sequestration in the lung, liver and muscle, presumably through interference with arteriolar and/or venular leukocyte sticking.     A new approach for global synchronization in hierarchical scheduled real-time systems

    We present our ongoing work to improve an existing synchronization protocol SIRAP for hierarchically scheduled real-time systems. A less pessimistic schedulability analysis is presented which can make the SIRAP protocol more efficient in terms of calculated CPU resource needs. In addition and for the same reason, an extended version of SIRAP is proposed, which decreases the interference from lower priority tasks. The new version of SIRAP has the potential to make the protocol more resource efficient than the original one

    Clinical management of common presentations of patients diagnosed with BPD during the COVID-19 pandemic: The contribution of the MBT framework

    The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has both a profound effect on mental health and affects how psychosocial interventions are delivered. In this paper, we outline particular difficulties patients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) may encounter as a result of the pandemic. We also consider changes in the provision of treatment, specifically the transition from face to face encounters to remotely delivered sessions. Building on a mentalization-based developmental framework, we use clinical vignettes to chart some of these challenges for patients, clinicians and teams. We then make practical recommendations for adaptations to work during the pandemic via the phone or video-link with BPD patients and other groups characterized by a vulnerability to unstable and imbalanced mentalizing. We conclude that the response to these challenges benefits from an existing treatment context that aims at fostering mentalizing and resilience, in which practitioners address the hierarchy of patient needs and their individual responses to the experience of remote treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic
